  • “Military service is mandatory here in Syria, unless
    you don’t have brothers or pay a lot of money to get
    out of it, then you must serve for two years.
    This is our last summer before we have to go and
    serve, so we plan to make it the best summer ever.
    We’re gonna sit in the sun, swim in the sea, eat
    barbequed chicken and hopefully kiss some girls.
    We need to prepare our stomachs, all my friends
    in the military tell me you can only eat Burghul
    (cracked wheat) and that they don’t even give you
    a glass to drink your tea with, you have to drink
    from an empty tuna can...”
